Ice cream!! The base for this is banana, whose natural sweetness removes the need for added sugar. I have added caramel whey for an added protein and flavour hit, but it works just as well without if you are not a fan of protein powders. Topped here with some dark chocolate, just because.

Bananas are blooming awesome ... fast acting carbohydrates, for post training refuel, as well as full of fibre and micronutrients. Particularly important post training is potassium, to replace that lost in sweat and so help you stay hydrated (salt balance).

This makes a tasty dessert, or even surprise breakfast guests by using it as a healthy topper for my pancakes (see my ‘Refuel and Recover Breakfast’) with a drizzle of peanut butter and a handful of berries for a truly indulgent tasting brunch that is full of quality macros, vitamins and minerals!! Watch them gasp in surprise as you assure them it is great for them!! Haha.

Eat up!!

Cooking time:

  • 5 mins prep, 5 hours freezing

  • 475g ripe banana

  • Large pinch ground cinnamon

  • 1 scoop whey (flavour of your choice, I like caramel)

  • 20g 85% dark chocolate, grated

  • Blitz the banana cinnamon and whey in blender until smooth.

  • Pour into freezable Tupperware and sprinkle over the chocolate.

  • Freeze overnight, or for up to one month.

  • Serve!

Variations to consider:

  • Yup, another super versatile recipe! Essentially, the banana is your base to which you can add anything you like!! Some combos I really like …

  • Vanilla pod plus vanilla whey, for vanilla ice cream!

  • Crushed pecans, to add fats and a dulce de leche type flavour!

  • Raspberries, vanilla extract, flaked almonds for a summery dessert flavour

  • Mango, lime and mint for holiday vibes!
